When does a project need a web application instead of a website?
A website presents the business. A web application is software in the browser: accounts, scheduling, a catalog with rules, a client portal, or a tool the staff uses every day. Steelbridge builds both, and the application work is scoped as software, with the same attention to speed and to how content gets in.
Central Oregon businesses ask for this when a marketing site cannot hold the operation. A shop that sells video lessons, a contractor who needs a job record, or a practice that books appointments are different problems from a homepage and a menu. Tanner Rice Online started from that kind of need: purchased video tutorials had to be delivered as downloads.
What gets decided up front
The useful questions are who signs in, what they are allowed to see, what has to be stored, and what happens when the data is wrong. Those answers change the build more than the color of the header. WordPress can be the content backend, including custom plugins and blocks, when editors should live in a familiar dashboard. A separate application is the better fit when the product is the software itself. Chris has used PHP, JavaScript, and MySQL on this kind of work, and Gatsby when a static front end was the right delivery.
WooCommerce is a frequent base for a store that still wants WordPress. Extending it is ordinary application work: custom product rules, cleaner checkout, and a theme that does not fight the shop.
What this is not
It is not a monthly website builder plan, and it is not hosting. The server the application runs on can be WordPress hosting or a host you already pay. Steelbridge builds the application.
If the application is really a slow or broken site that already exists, performance or site rescue may be the smaller project. Drawers, dialogs, command palettes, and windowed lists are demonstrated in the lab.
When the work has to be installed on the phone, that is native app development. The same questions apply: what the software has to do, and what the site already covers.
